Negros Construction Worker Accidentally Digs 12th Century Treasure Worth P16.8M

The National Geographic sent three Archeologists to Silay City, Negros Occidental after a local construction worker found a cache of 12th century gold and silver coins, rare gold jewelry, and other artifacts dated more than 2,000 years ago. The treasure was reportedly discovered four months ago, but was only revealed by National Geographic recently.

“Doming” Agravante (not his real first name for security reason), a native of Sitio Estaca was tasked by the Golez clan (one of prominent families in the City) to dig around their unoccupied property for wall construction. Agravante first saw a gold ring after his shovel struck and broke some porcelain two feet below. He continued digging and found several gold and silver coins.

Unable to sleep at night, he reported his findings to the property owner. Mr. Golez immediately went to the site and told Agravante to dig more without the knowledge of local residents.

The Philippine Pride was able to conduct an exclusive interview with Mr. Agravante, who is now living in Bacolod City.
According to the report released by The National Geographic, the cache was dated back to the Roman Empire. Archeologists are investigating why and how the treasure of such importance was found in the Philippines.

Sitio Estaca is the oldest recorded civilization in the City dating back during 1500s. SilayCity is known for historical sites and landmarks, but this is the first time that treasure of such age was discovered.

Other Archeologists who are not involved in the investigation suggests that the treasure was looted by Mongolian Empire soldiers from Eastern Europe and was brought to China.Silay City is known to be one of the first settlements where ancient Chinese immigrants were living before Spanish colonization.

Mr. Golez, a prominent resident with family members in US asked for help from his American relatives. A niece who happens to work at The National Geographic took care of everything. All finds were sent to the Institution for appraisal and for further studies. The total value of the treasure in today’s currency according to the agency was US$380,431 or 16.8M Philippine Pesos.

Agravante was rewarded with unspecified amount of money and the rest went to Mr. Golez, but he donated 30% back to the Institution.

“We are certain that this is not the only treasure buried in this City. There might be other finds before, but was not reported publicly”, Dr. Denzel Schwartz told local reporters during press conference on Friday.

yamashita treasure philippines

Hi all,

I read the forum and other websites the last day, as I talked with a friend of a friend here in Cebu. (Im a foreigner living here) He came over this other guy 5 years ago.
In Short, landowner in Leyte found 585 bars some years ago, marked with sumatra 99.99, 6 inches long, 2 wide, 1.5 high, weight 6.2kg.
Im not blind and knows there is a world of scams out there and here hehe. I seen some pictures of bars and a budha but pics isnt worth much.

The farmers that owned the land discovers the treasure in a cave, some years laters one of the family pawns one bar, for 300.000Pesos, with my friends (A) friends(B) boss (C), due to some (cockfight gambling reasons whatever). After 3 days due time was up and the boss kept the gold bar.

B and C got this bar tested afterwards in a hotel room and the results showed it was real.

Now, This family want to sell out all or bigger parts, due to the fact they are still poor and also scared for their lives. B told me that the family once sold 50 grams in a shop and after that people start talking and they felt like being watched, and this is the reason they dont sell more than minimum needed. Everything is corrupt here and you die for less than a dollar, its understandable.

My main point. Im not a treasure hunter nor have I any experience. B wants me to meet 1 or 2 of the family and have it tested etc at my preferred location, for my own safety reasons. He agreed they can bring 4 bars and I can drill them wherever I want due to acid testing and so on. I still dont believe this is real bars but I never read any scam involving drilling or cutting the bar before purchase. I read some telling that one get scammed by getting edges for testing but the inside of the bar is fake etc.

Could anyone advice me on this. As I see it, if its real wohoo, if its not, they will be caught (I have a few highly placed friends here). Anyways, I dont have the funds to buy any so any advice on that one aswell?

thx

I totally agree. I can have it brought here or go there to test it at my chosen location. also its ok that I chose the bar I want to drill and where I want to drill on it.
I find that alittle odd if its fake aswell.

There are no legitimate bars of gold marked Sumatra.
The true value of the gold may be the story itself, a testament to man’s ability to believe anything for a chance at such a vast fortune.

Testing usually isn't allowed unless you bring some front money. That's usually when the mark gets rolled.

How the heck would one transport out 580+ bars in secrecy? 3600kg

Anyways, I will tell the middle guy that I will not bring any money there until testing is done and proven real. Lets see what the answer is. As I mentioned, I asked for 4 bars to test not only 1.

Another question. Sumatra bars only have 4 stars, right? not 5.

Well....since you asked.

Sumatra gold bars are fantasy bars of gold, created for the purpose of fraudulently revealing gullible people of their money. In easier terms, and loosely translated...it means there is no such thing as Sumatra bars.

Therefor, there is no relevancy if there are 4, 5, 6, 7 or 8 stars. It is however many stars the fraudster/scammer/evil-villain wants to put on the painted bar of lead....er, gold

If SWR isn't clear enough for you, try googling scams such as this. No disrespect but it would save you & your friend plane fare hotel etc. to just throw your money to the wind. If you can't find someone with a ton of experience buying & testing let the deal go!

Testing even 4 bars out of 580 their choice which bars they bring!?!? The percentage of getting ripped off is astronomical.

Even if the bars are real, You can almost count on waking up with a headache in an alley.

Gold treasure at India temple could be the largest in the world

NEW DELHI (Commodity Online) : The value of treasure consisting of thousands of kilos of gold, diamonds, gems and Silver ornaments, found concealed in different cellars at Sree Padmanabha swamy temple in Thiruvananthapuram, capital of South Indian state of Kerala, is estimated to cross over a mind-blowing Rs 1,00,000 crore ($22 billion).

As per expert accounts, this could be the largest treasure of Gold found anywhere in India and possibly in the world. Two more cellars are to be opened on Monday which could add more value to the already whopping amount.

Analysts said the estimated amount is nearly three times the annual budget size of Kerala. Experts are yet to find out the antique value of the rare articles found from the secret cellars.

However, some experts have questioned the quick estimates, saying it would take several weeks to make an assessment.

The priceless articles includes a gold sheaf weighing 500 kilos, an 18-foot gold chain weighing 10.5 kilos, a 36-kilo golden veil, quintals of gold granules and nuggets, crowns, numerous jewels and diamonds including those from Antwerp and rare coins from many countries including France.

The vaults were opened after India’s apex court, the Supreme Court ordered the state government to take over the temple's assets from a trust controlled by the royal family of Travancore.

The temple has six underground chambers. The two chambers that were opened were last looked at about 130 years ago.

With this stunning discovery, the Sri Padmanabha Swamy Temple has become the richest Hindu temple in India, bypassing the Balaji temple at Tirupati. The Tirupati temple is known to have gold worth Rs 42,000 crore.

The Sri Padmanabhaswamy temple was built in the 16th century by the kings of Travancore. The descendents of the royal family had appealed to the Supreme Court against the petition for the takeover.

The shrine, located right in the heart of the Kerala's capital, is run by a trust floated by the Travancore royal house, to which Lord Padmanabha is the family deity.

Princely states in India merged with the Indian republic after the country gained Independence from British rule in 1947. Initially, the princes were allowed to retain their titles and some property, and were given funds in lieu of the revenue they earlier earned.

But the funds and their titles were abolished in 1971. The descendants of the Travancore royal family, however, continued to control the Sri Padmanabhaswamy temple through the trust.

Meanwhile, the findings have raised serious questions about the treasure’s ownership rights and its future security. It has become a big headache for both Kerala and India governments because of security reasons.

Security experts say that the Kerala Police do not have the means and expertise to provide security to such huge wealth. “You need laser-protected safes, digital surveillance and other such modern systems and programmes for providing security to things like this," a police official said.

With the revelation that the temple cellars are holding unimaginably huge treasures, controversies have sparked off over who the real owners of this wealth are. Believers argue that the wealth belongs to the temple and should continue to be kept in the temple itself under foolproof security.

However, some historians say that the treasure was actually public property hidden away by the erstwhile kings. Atheists and rationalists argue that the treasure could have been black wealth amassed by the kings and hidden in the temple for reasons of the peculiar security situation of those times.

However, Uthradam Thirunnal Marthanda Varma, the present heir of the royalty, said he did not want to say anything about the treasure, describing it as the wealth of Lord Padmanabha. “I must not say anything about it. I am just seeing what is happening,” he said.

Gold prices feed fever on Philippines' Mt. Diwata

by Jason Gutierrez, Agence France-Presse
Posted at 10/21/2011 11:31 AM | Updated as of 10/21/2011 1:11 PM

MOUNT DIWATA - As grime-covered men emerge from deep shafts on the Philippines' "golden mountain", Norie Palma eagerly prepares to haggle for her share of ore from the weary miners.

The former laundrywoman turned gold buyer directs the procession to her small milling shack amid grunts from the miners whose backs are stooped under the weight of their hauls from the dangerous honeycomb tunnels of Mount Diwata.

"It is like this everyday. People are always digging, searching and haggling for that stone with the best gold," says Palma, a 36-year-old mother of four who runs one of many backyard mining operations on Mount Diwata.

"Gold is what we live for on this mountain."

With global gold prices rising as investors park their funds in the precious metal to hedge against an uncertain global economy, Palma said she and other prospectors on Mount Diwata were enjoying a windfall.

Gold hit a record high of $1,921.15 an ounce in early September and, although it has since fallen back, some analysts have forecast it will hit the $2,000 mark this year.

A college dropout, Palma's operation has lately been producing thousands of dollars’ worth of gold -- a fortune in the impoverished Philippines.

"You could say gold changed our life. I now have the money to buy the things that I want," she said. "And we want more of it while the prices are high."

Palma buys the ore dug up by the miners who don't have the means to process it, then trades with jewellers and brokers who regularly make the arduous trip up the 2,012 meter (6,600 feet) mountain to buy the yellow nuggets.

The Philippines has some of the biggest gold and other mineral deposits in the world, according to the US government, but the country's official mining industry is relatively small and hard to access for foreign firms.

Illegal mining, in which individuals or small-scale ventures simply start digging on vacant land, is rampant.

Mount Diwata -- located in the violence-plagued and often lawless southern region of Mindanao -- is the country's biggest and most famous of these "gold rush" sites.

It has yielded at least 2.7 million ounces of high grade ore since a tribesman first discovered gold there three decades ago, according to local government data.

The discovery of gold on the mountain triggered a mad rush of people from all walks of life, from military deserters and ex-communist rebels to gun runners and ordinary folk dreaming of that life-changing haul.

The government estimates that at the height of the gold fever in the early 1980s, the population in the area peaked at nearly 100,000.

The present population is believed to be 40,000, according to officials, but they said more miners had started returning to the area recently to take advantage of the rising prices.

However, Mount Diwata is as famous for the misery it has wrought upon the miners and the destruction of the local environment as it is for the riches enjoyed by the lucky ones.

The first generation miners and their families settled in small cliff-side shacks and dug tunnels under their homes, creating the blueprint for a chaotic and dangerous existence in which many laws of society and nature were ignored.

Highly toxic mercury is used in the mining process, polluting the Naboc stream that cuts through the village.

Armed disputes erupted between rival miners and their thugs, according to local village chief Rodolfo Boyles, himself an ex-miner, although he said violence dropped after the military stationed some troops there nine years ago.

He said hundreds of people had also perished in cave-ins and other mine-related accidents.

The hardships of working the mines have earned Diwata the tag "diwalwal", local slang referring to tongues that hang out after a hard day's labor in the tunnels.

"When you enter the mines your life is already at stake, you might be buried there or you might get hit by falling rock," said Dandy Labrador, 28, who left his work as a security guard to become a miner.

"It is dangerous and anything can happen."

Labrador said he arrived at Mount Diwata several years ago filled with dreams of striking it rich, but found that fortune-hunting was back-breaking work.

Like the vast bulk of the miners, Labrador works as a hired hand and is paid with a share of the ore that he digs up. He then sell his ore to brokers.

Still, Labrador said he earned more than he would as a construction worker or labourer in Manila, the country's capital.

"And I have not given up on my dream of becoming rich," he said.

Boyles said there had long been a plan to bring in big mining firms with modern extraction methods and make the operations there legal, but small miners had resisted the idea and continued to virtually control Mount Diwata.

With the high global gold prices, the government is concerned that there will be more Mount Diwata-style operations around the country.

Environment Secretary Ramon Paje recently said 70 percent of gold produced in the country already came from illegal mines.

"There is the possibility of a gold rush, because gold is the safest commodity right now," he said. "But we have to manage our resources well... this is not the kind of mining we want to encourage."

We are in _____. Our assayer must assay the product first to determine purity. Our assayer is well known and we will provide his credentials when you are ready. This is easily done just about anywhere of your choosing. We pay cash or deposit directly into your bank account if you are already set up at a bank. We have connections at (names of 3 banks mentioned) in _____ City and ______.

If safety is a concern, the best way to do a test buy is for you and your security team to bring one bar to the bank in a brief case and use the banks vault room for our meeting with our assayer. Immediately after the assay, you will be paid cash and provided a carring bag that can be protected by your security team.

We reccomend you take some cash and deposit the rest in multiple accounts in the bank using multiple members of your team. What we like to do is put all of the cash in a safe deposit box at the bank so when you arrive you can view the cash and count it if you like.

After viewing the cash, you can have the bar brought in so we can view and assay on the spot. This only takes 30 minutes, and you will be on your way. This test buy is simple and safe and we could then purchase as much as you would like to sell. We have the ability to purchase very large amounts weekly.

If you do not like comming to the bank and would rather do the assay in a hotel room, this can also be arranged, but we will have to bring our security team which would consist of atleast 3 people.

We are members of (______, a TH Org.)
We can provide credentials when the time is appropriate.

I look forward to hearing from you,

(Buyer)

Rock Signs

How about this? Giant Turtle

Mar 12, 2009

Down Below at 50 Feet

Finally we have reached the "target" at approx. 50 ft. below surface. We have glimpsed on the portion of the "white concrete" rock.

This narrative will be paused for a while for obvious reason. We shall resume after we have some significant recovery/retrieval worth sharing with other fellow THunters.

We can be reached at: thu_ong@yahoo.com.

As the dewatering was on progress.

Finally as the white concrete was beginning to be exposed out of the decreasing level of water.

Mar 10, 2009

Deep Expectation

Our digging team is continuous in our search for a samll portion of the fabled YTH in our place. We are following the path taken by the previous THunters that have reached the "white marble" cement slab but were not able to break open the concrete vault.

We have reached the bottom of the bamboo fences and gone much more deeper but there are a lot of positive indications that we shall reach concrete vault bsed on our rate of excavation within the next few days.

The water well shown on the above picture was done by the previous THunters as shown by the fresh marks of cutting on the soil. From this depth, it's approximately another 6 to 8 feet to reach the marble slab.

The blue PVC pipe is another confirmation of the account of one of the members of the THunters that have operated on the site previously. On our debriefing, he told us that once we have reached the "water well", we should encounter the blue 1-1/2" PVC pipe which they have previously used for their dewatering works. And according to him, the bottom of the pit, slightly lower than the depth of the concrete slab was on the end of the pipe.

Upon reaching this point, one member of our present team had pulled out the pipe and measured the length of the PVC pipe. Again another confirmation to the statement of the previous diggers, it's smack to 6 ft.

THe members of our team were so excited on the latest development that we are now working last Sunday.

There are only two things that could stop the operation every now and then:
RAIN - which can hamper the actual excavation works. We ususally stop all digging and excavation works during rainy days
POWER OUTAGE - which automatically shuts off our power supply for the submersible pump and lighting lapms in the dig area.

With lots of prayers and aspirations, we are still hoping for the best results within this year's TH Season.

Feb 13, 2009

Downward Quest

The team have finally resumed the search down.

We are working on a dome like area. At the bottom we are using plywood box caisson with wooden framing to constraint the excavation area. This way, we can go down faster too.

With this only one man is required to work inside. His buddy would pile up and fill the bag with sand and to be stock piled by the other two men. The team works on a buddy system although there is only one man on the top of the dig who handles the winch and acts as the look out and surface support.

The excavated sand is being filled up in the bags and being stock piled on top of the box for a while. The pile bags filled with sand act as weight that will help sink the wooden box as the bottom is being excavated.

Then the accumulated sand bags are being transferred at the higher stocking area at the back of the retaining bamboo fences. This way, and unlike the previous operation last year, there is no need to bring the excavated sand to the top of the dig. Rather it is being piled up within the working area in the bottom of the dig to augment the retention of sand inside and in return to prevent the chances of further bar down. The most important consolation is lesser work for the members of the digging team.

Another interesting observation, is that once water dries inside the wooden box, there was a sudden surge of water like bubbling that penetrates from the surrounding ground/sand. The previous theory that there is a natural underground water source that is passing through our area of excavation may not be the real situation.

For all we know the Japs always included in their sites man-made water traps which they usually sourced from near-by bodies of water. A small stream in our case.

The team will try to locate the source of the water trap from a upstream side of the stream which was theorized to be within the vicinity of the waterfall.

Indeed, searching for the eluded YTh is never an-easy task.

We, nevertheless, have still our high hopes that this year, will be the year!

Feb 9, 2009

Reinforcing the retaining fences

We have further reinforced the bottom of the dig with sand bags. We have lined up the bags at the back of the bamboo retianing fences directly facing the exposed mouth/entry of the tunnel using bamboo and empty polythelense sacks filled with volcanic sand from inside the bamboo fences.

Feb 8, 2009

Last Year's Dig

Last year just before we stopped the operation before the rainy days recess, we have sorted out that due to the increased volume of water, what we have reached may be covered with sand silt and erosion once more.

So to minimize the erosion and bar down, we have decided to install bamboo retaining fences to minimize the volume of sand back into our dig.

Our dig was then approx. 44 ft MOL from the surface and the target concrete slab was then approch. within reach - meaning within 8- 10 ft. But then, the dewatering operation lasted for more than five hours per days which had been a burden to the operational cost and budget. So we have decided to call it off for theseason and be back on the next TH Season.

Directly on the bottom of the dig were to logs arranged west to east. meaning with the bigger diamter running from the west end to the east direction.

We have to by-passed the said log and proceed downward as instructed by the people who have previously reached the concrete slab but were not give the oppurtunity to break it.

They described to us that the concrete slab was like a white marble with an engraved buddha figure on the upper right corner meaning with its top on the northeast corner of the slab. The "marble slab" according to them was so hard to break that the sledge hammer that they were using just bounced off to the surface of the slab. They were not able to break the slab.

I hope that this is our chance to prove that we are deserving to break and open up the concrete slab.

Tunnel Branch Revealed

The tail of the monsoon signals the start of the TH season in the Philippines. A lot of enthusiasts are waiting for the beginning of summer season which means lesser water to pump out from the digs and TH sites.

Just like anybody else with a site to explore, we have waited for the end of the rainy season which, usually runs from the mnoth of May until the end of January the following year. It varies from region to region.

For TH operations, rainy seasons mean more headache for the water trap since there will be more water to handle, and more dangerous due to a higher chance of bar down and collapse of the tunnels, digs, caves, etc. This affects everyone including the highly-financed operation.

On our site, we were expecting a good battle with the dewatering of our dig since we had experienced the same scenario last year when we started operating our site.

But to our surprise and amazement, the usual five hours daily dewatering had been reduced to two hours only. And bigger is our surprise since when water was cleared on the bottom of our dig, two obvious holes have emerged.

There was a tunnel revealed on the eastern side of the dig and an air vent on the western side of the wall.

Both holes are approximately located opposite each other at 36 ft below the surface. At the bottom of the tunnel, is sign of waterpaths. Although the bottom of the tunnel lied below the surface of the water inside the dig during rainy days but surely it lies now above the water level before our dewatering as shown on the water marks on our retaining bamboo fence at the bottom of the dig.
